Jerry Jones: Cowboys Didn't Have “Any Inkling” About Sam Hurd

Hurd, who played four seasons for Dallas, was arrested last week on drug charges

This shouldn’t come as any surprise, but Jerry Jones said after the Cowboys’ victory in Tampa Bay Saturday night that, when he was with Dallas, no one around the team had the slightest idea about the activities that led to Sam Hurd’s arrest on federal drug charges last week.

"I really tell you there wasn't anybody, anywhere--including our league reps or anybody they knew in law enforcement--that had any inkling about this,” Jones said, per ESPN Dallas. “Until his arrest, no one.”

That NFL teams these days conduct expansive background checks, sometimes to the point of stark intrusiveness, is well documented (see: Dez Bryant’s pre-draft interview with the Dolphins) which only adds to the weirdness of this story--that seemingly no one had any idea that Hurd was anything but a hard-working receiver.

"I can't tell you how thorough we are," Jones said. "Very through. Extremely thorough. And I'm satisfied that we're extremely thorough. Now I do have firsthand input, and I'm aware and know how the league [operates] and what we do as a team, and it doesn't make me think about our thoroughness."
