Jerry: Doug Free Likely to Compete For Starting Job

It was widely assumed that Free would be released this offseason

Last week, we learned that right tackle Doug Free was secure in his spot with the Dallas Cowboys, at least for now. It was a little surprising, as it was all but assumed that the highly-paid Free would be cut this offseason.

Now, Jerry Jones is saying that Free will be competing for a starting job in the coming months--and that the team doesn’t feel that they need to make a decision on the veteran before the draft in late-April.

"I think there’s more to it, without trying to talk in riddles," Jones said, per ESPN Dallas. "There’s more to it. That implies a decision after the draft on Free, and we may be doing things there with our offensive line before the draft, relative to Free."

Jones, who added that he wouldn’t ask Free to take a pay-cut, seems to like the combination of Free and Jermey Parnell at the tackle spot opposite Tyron Smith.

"Frankly, we’ve got--and it’s really born out on our evaluation--the combination there of Parnell and Free. That combination, because the act of splitting time gives you a great [backup] tackle situation, which you’ve got to have in the ballgame anyway, and, boy, they played well together out there."
