Jerry: Cowboys Get a D or an F in the “Having an Operable Backup QB” Department

The Cowboys have gone 0-7 in games not started by Tony Romo this year

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones admitted in an appearance on 105.3-FM The Fan’s K&C Masterpiece show on Tuesday that the team had had designs on grooming Brandon Weeden for the future, “but that didn’t work out for us.”

Presumably, Jones had expected better out of Weeden than what he showed in three starts, all losses, in Tony Romo’s absence. In those games, Weeden’s numbers weren’t terrible across the board, but he also took no risks, leaving opposing defenses to load up the box, blot out the run and slow the Cowboys’ offense to the point of stagnancy.

Weeden was replaced by Matt Cassel, and then released on November 17. He was picked up by the Texans the next day. As for Cassel, who went 0-4 himself in starts this season, he will step back into the starting role beginning Monday night against Washington.

"Consequently, I think we have made a D, if you want to give it that, make it an F, relative to how we have approached this situation if Romo should get hurt," Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. "We should be building for the future as well as have an operable quarterback behind our starter, Romo. And that's where we're going to try and get to."
