Looking back on 25 years of ownership of the Dallas Cowboys this week, Jerry Jones placed the blame for the team’s inability to get back to the Super Bowl over the past decade and a half squarely on his own shoulders.
“We should have been knocking on the door and we haven’t and I have no excuses, it starts here,” Jones told Ben & Skin of 105.3-FM The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News. “But we have not, and I know that to the extent that we have a healthy Romo, our best chance to get back there right now, our best chance to get in the Super Bowl is a healthy Romo.”
In an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Jones expressed regret that the team didn’t fulfill its potential in 2007, when Wade Phillips led the team to a 13-3 record before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in the first round of the playoffs. That team was the best of the Phillips era, but Jones believes several of those teams had the talent to do much more.
“Now, for us not to have gotten it done during those years is a mess up,” Jones said. “You’ve got to get it when you’re high like that, when you’re high up on it. I think that you can miss your bus when you’ve got your quarterback and you’ve got good talent around him.”
