Is Jason Garrett Hanging Out With the Wrong Larry Brown?

Jason Garrett likes to continue his precious “process,” even in the off-season.

The Cowboys’ head coach is always trying to learn, and he sometimes leans on the best in an attempt to get better. Couple years ago he visited legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Last year it was a trek to Yankees’ spring training to hang out with manager Joe Girardi. And this year he’s spending some quality time with a 73-year-old coaching lifer.

Not, not Monte Kiffin. SMU hoops coach Larry Brown.

Garrett attended last weekend’s upset of Cincinnati that propelled the Mustangs into the Top 25 for the first time since 1985 and on Wednesday hung out at practice in Dallas’ Moody Coliseum.

Dear Jason, be careful.

But here’s hoping Garrett didn’t learn everything Brown has to offer. Sure, he’s resurrected the Ponies from the dead and is the only coach to win championships in both college and the NBA. But Brown’s legacy is actually that of being the greatest nomad in the history of coaching.

He’s had 14 different coaching gigs including SMU. I suspect part of his chalk talk with Garrett was a whisper of “Above all else, stay packed.” Garrett, of course, is entering the final year of his contract.

For my money, Garrett would spend some off-season time hanging out with the other Larry Brown. The one who played for the Cowboys. The one with the Super Bowl ring and the MVP trophy.

Why? Because the Cowboys have no problems with being organized. With discipline. What they are continuously hampered by is failure to cover opposing receivers. Surely Larry Brown can provide a meaningful tip or two.
