Interesting Perspective Given on Rangers-Astros

If you haven't read the viral column in the Houston Chronicle today, don't bother.

If you want to see some facts, look no further than the good guys from The Dallas Morning News as Gerry Fraley broke down some pretty interesting points in comparing just how good the two teams have been going back to the beginning of May last season.

The difference between now and then is that then, the Astros were off to a red-hot start and the Rangers were awful. Now, the Rangers are in first place two weeks in and the Astros aren't. Of course, that means nothing this early in the year, but taking a look back further to last May, you can see who the better of the two teams has been.

As Fraley points out, since May 3, the Rangers are 87-64, and the Astros are 73-77 — four games under .500. That's a stark contrast. The Rangers' team batting average is .263 in that time, and the Astros check in at .249. The Rangers have scored 68 more runs over that time and have blown fewer save chances. The Astros have more homers (big whoop) and the only meaningful stat Houston controls is team ERA at 3.76 to the Rangers' 4.23.

So it all starts again on Tuesday night, and it's going to be fun. It's been cute to see the lil' Astros get good again, and it's good for baseball in Texas. But let's not forget who the better team and the defending AL West champions are.
