How the Rangers Could've Had Cano

If you're not familiar with ESPN's 30 for 30 documentaries, you need to be. Sometimes there are some clunkers, but most of the time they are pretty much guaranteed greatness.

Something the folks behind them, namely Bill Simmons and his new-ish Grantland venture, have started recently is 30 for 30 documentary shorts that can be viewed online, for free.

The newest one, called "The Deal", is about how Alex Rodriguez ended up in New York after growing frustrated with playing in Texas, and how the Yankees "won" the A-Rod bidding over the Boston Red Sox.

You should watch it. But if not, just know this. A-Rod was going to one of the two teams between the Yankees and Red Sox, because they were only teams who were capable of giving him money he'd gotten accustomed to in Texas.

The Red Sox were close to sending Manny Ramirez and John Lester to the Rangers for A-Rod, but when Yankees third baseman Aaron Boone got injured, the Yankees upped their ante and sent the Rangers the league's best offensive second baseman, Alfonso Soriano, along with a prospect of the Rangers' choice.

The Rangers' choice? Joaquin Arias. Also on the list of available prospects? Yup, Robinson Cano.

That's only one layer of the film, which examines the rollercoaster ride of the back-and-forth talks between the Yankees and Red Sox with former Rangers owner Tom Hicks.
