How FC Dallas Has Become the Best in MLS

FC Dallas continues to fly under the radar.

The best kept secret in soccer currently have the best record in Major League Soccer at 13-6-6 and lead the Western Conference with 45 points, three more than second place Colorado. FC Dallas is also on a four-match unbeaten streak after their 2-2 draw against Sporting Kansas City over the weekend.

But what’s really impressive is how FC Dallas takes care of business at home. They’re on an 18-match unbeaten run at the friendly confines of Toyota Stadium in Frisco.

“We just approach each home game with a lot of confidence,” said defender Walker Zimmerman. “The support that we get week in and week out from our fans plays a big part in that kind of streak.”

“Obviously it’s an honor,” said midfielder and Wylie native Victor Ulloa. “On the personal side I grew up here so there’s nothing better than playing in front of your home fans. We are on a great streak and we want to keep it going.”

Ulloa is a home grown player who signed with FC Dallas in 2010. He’s been clutch for the club over the last couple of weeks, netting a goal on a corner kick late in stoppage time in the 2-1 win over LA Galaxy during the U.S. Open Cup semifinal.

But just as important is how much Ulloa loves to play for the hometown team.

“It’s just a lot of pride and a lot of honor,” said Ulloa. “I’m blessed to play in front of a lot of my friends and my family.”

FC Dallas will now have to find a way to take the home-cooking on the road. They start this weekend in Utah against Real Salt Lake, then leave the country for a trip to Nicaragua for a CONCACAF Champions match against Real Esteli FC. After that, it’s a match against in-state rival Dynamo in Houston. Their next home match isn’t until the first week of September against Portland.

“It’s just about maintaining that mentality that we have been playing with,” said Zimmerman. “Just sticking to our game plan, sticking to our identity that we’ve built and trusting in that.”

First kick against Real Salt Lake is Saturday at 9 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
