A famous trade that helped boost the Dallas Cowboys from bottom-feeders to Super Bowl champs in a matter of a few years is being compared to another one involving a DFW sports team just months ago.
ESPN's Keith Law, in speaking with NJ Advanced Media on Tuesday, referred to the Rangers and Phillies trade last July that gave the Rangers Cole Hamels as the Phillies' version of the Cowboys' Herschel Walker trade back in 1989 just after Jerry Jones had bought the Cowboys and hired Jimmy Johnson as his head coach.
In case you forgot, the Cowboys got back a slew of draft picks from the Vikings for their Pro Bowl running back and turned those picks into several star players that were key members of their run of three Super Bowl titles in four years in the early 1990s.
Law compared the Phillies' haul in Rangers prospects to that deal for the Cowboys, but the hope locally anyway is that Hamels works out better for the Rangers than Walker did for the Vikings.
"Alfaro is hitter, regardless of if he plays catcher or the outfield," Law said. "Williams has a chance to be very dynamic. I'm convinced that Jake Thompson is a major-league starter, likely a very solid No. 3. Those players all could be part of the next winning Phillies team or shipped off in trades to acquire players that will get the Phillies there by the end of this decade."
You always want trades to be of the win-win variety, even if your side gets a little bit more than you give up. So hopefully the trade turns the Phillies into winners again and increases the outside view of the Rangers' farm system and the prospects in produces.
