NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said recently that talks of playoff expansion are still going strong, and that the issue will be on the table this week at the annual league meetings in Phoenix, AZ.
The idea of expanding the postseason field from 12 to 14 teams has been out there for a long time now, but we haven’t heard as much about it this offseason as we did last year to this point. In a discussion with Roger Goodell on MMQB this week, Peter King asked the commish why the expansion talks have cooled, and Goodell quickly asserted that they haven’t.
“I don’t think it’s cooled at all,” Goodell said. “There are a lot of factors that go into it. One, we want to be right when we do it ... It’s something that we think has got a lot of merit from a competitive side, because it would actually add more teams to the race as you get toward the end of the season. There’s the broadcasting side of it. When would you play that extra game? [A seventh playoff team in each conference would leave] one bye for the first seed in each conference.”
The NFL league meetings kicked off Monday morning in Atlanta.
