Don't get too excited, folks.
Chris Gimenez isn't going to be a savior for the Texas Rangers' injury-riddled season, but since being called up in place of the failed J.P. Arencibia behind the plate, the 31-year-old journeyman has started the past two games — both wins. On Thursday in the series opener in Detroit, Gimenez went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.
Gimenez is now halfway to Arencibia's hit total. Gimenez has played in two games this year, while Arencibia played in 20.
While Gimenez was going 4-for-5 at the plate, he was also having a good day behind it in helping Yu Darvish turn in seven solid innings of work as the Rangers rolled to a 9-2 win over the team with the second-best record in the American League, handing the Tigers their fourth straight loss.
“Not only is he a great player, but he's a great person,” Darvish told reporters through an interpreter. “He let me do whatever I wanted to do, so I felt good.”
Gimenez's favorite part of the day? It might not have been his four hits, but it might have been the first time he saw Darvish's incredibly filthy slider baffle hitter after hitter.
"It's disgusting," Gimenez told reporters. "He could tell you he's going to throw it and you'd still get out."

Don't expect these games for Gimenez regularly. In fact, don't expect him to get more than two starts a week with how Robinson Chirinos has performed, but he's already better than Arencibia was, so that's a bonus.
