Garrett Says “It Doesn't Matter” Who Starts at Running Back

Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle both figure to see a lot of work in the opener on Sunday night

No one knew Cardale Jones had won the starting quarterback job for the Ohio State Buckeyes, including Jones himself, until he was sent out to the huddle for the first offensive series of the game against Virginia Tech on Monday night. Why? We don’t really know, other than that Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer felt like doing it that way for whatever reason.

There’s no mystery as to who the Cowboys will trot out at quarterback on Sunday night against the Giants, but we may be left to guess until the first offensive series of the game who the starting running back is--and even then, the starter Sunday might not be the starter in Week 2. Why? Because Jason Garrett doesn’t think the title of starter matters. At all.

It doesn’t matter,” Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “The only thing that matters is everybody getting ready to play and when their number is called upon, be ready to go out there and be their best.”

Whoever’s number is called first, both Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden figure to see a lot of work against the Giants, and Garrett had high praise for both this week. Randle is the relatively unknown youngster, who has been good in his two years with Dallas, but in a very limited role. How he’ll handle a much expanded role remains to be seen. On the other hand, former 4th overall pick Darren McFadden is looking for some redemption after seven mostly disappointing seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

“We think a lot of Darren McFadden,” Garrett said. “That’s why we signed him. And he’s done a good job for us. He was injured early on in camp, but since he has been back playing he has handled everything we have asked him to do really, really well.”
