Garrett: No Potential QB Pick Made Sense For Cowboys

The Cowboys never really considered drafting a quarterback last weekend

After Jerry Jones went on record as saying it’s about time for the team to start looking for a quarterback to mold as Tony Romo’s eventual successor, the Dallas Cowboys showed as much pre-draft interest in the position as we’ve seen in recent years.

Among the quarterbacks they hosted at Valley Ranch prior to the draft were Baylor’s Bryce Petty, Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson and UCLA’s Brett Hundley. Grayson went in the third round to the Saints, Petty went in the fourth to the Jets and Hundley went in the fifth to the Packers.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, never considered taking a quarterback--because, head coach Jason Garrett said, there was never a point during the draft where taking a quarterback made sense.

All positions are always in the mix,” Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “We evaluate guys, we put them up on the board and if it made sense for us at a particular time to take one of these quarterbacks who we liked, we’d be all in to take one. Same thing with the running back position. Same thing with the receiver position. For whatever reason, we liked guys on the board better and went ahead and pulled the trigger on them.”
