According to Jason Garrett, DeMarco Murray’s response after suffering a broken hand in Week 15 set the tone for the Dallas Cowboys’ late-season run.
Murray suffered the injury in the victory over the Philadelphia Eagles but, somewhat miraculously, didn’t miss a game. He ran for 58 yards the following in the 44-16 dismantling of the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16, and went for 100 in the regular season finale in Washington.
In the team’s two postseason games, against the Lions and the Packers, he went for 198.
“What he did for our football team after he broke his hand, I thought was really significant,” Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “After that ballgame, he looked me in the eye and said ‘I’m playing.’ I had a conversation with him on the plane that night, ‘I’m playing.’ The next day, ‘I’m playing.’ After his surgery, ‘I’m playing.’ He went out two days later and practiced and then three days later and played.
“I think that really, really pervaded our team to understand what he was all about and what our team was all about. That was big."
Now, to see if the Cowboys can keep Murray around. Owner Jerry Jones said last week that it’s not necessarily realistic to think Dallas can bring back both Murray and Dez Bryant.
