Garrett Looking to Help Dez Bryant “Get His Feet Underneath Him”

Bryant missed all offseason workouts as a way to lobby for a new contract

Echoing the sentiments of Cowboys executive vice president and C.O.O. Stephen Jones, head coach Jason Garrett stated this week that the Cowboys plan to ease Dez Bryant back into action to some degree, after he missed all offseason workouts as a means of lobbying for that new contract.

Dez has worked very hard,” Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “We know that. He looks great. But at the same time we want to make sure he gets his feet underneath him. ... So we’ll catch Dez up. We’ll make sure we have our eyes on him and make sure we come up with the appropriate plan.”

Garrett made clear that there’s no acrimony between the two sides, after the contract negotiations got at least mildly acrimonious there toward the deadline, before the deal got done. That’s all in the business, Garrett says, and the team’s just glad to have Bryant back.

“You don’t want the business of the NFL to creep in as you get closer to the season,” Garrett said. “The business is real. Different teams deal with it really throughout the process of getting your team ready to play in the regular season. You have to take the emotion out of it. You have to understand it is a business and stay focused on what you want to be focused on. But it’s fun to have him back. It’s fun to have him in the fold and excited to see him out there on the practice field.”
