The Ice Sheet: Detroit-Pittsburgh for the Cup

Every day from Monday to Saturday, The Ice Sheet will take a look at the biggest stories in the league that happened on the ice and elsewhere the night before.

The Stanley Cup Finals matchup is now set. The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first all-American Final since 2003.

an emphatic 4-1 win game was covered live

The Wings jumped out to an early lead, with their first goal going in off Kris Draper's chin at 3:45 of the first. Pavel Datsyuk added a power play goal just under eight minutes later and Dallas Drake extended the lead at 16:17. Henrik Zetterberg finished off Detroit's scoring for the night with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 3:11 of the second period. Dallas broke Chris Osgood's shutout with a Stephane Robidas tally at 2:27 of the third period.

It was not a flawless game by the Wings. They took eight penalties and handed the Stars seven power plays. They also allowed 16 shots in the third while managing just seven. There was little to complain about, however. as their penalty killing was nearly impeccable. When the Stars turned it up a notch in the third, Chris Osgood and the defense were there to prevent a comeback. An all-around strong effort and really one of their best of the post-season.

Two of the League's most talented teams will now meet for the first time this season to compete for the Stanley Cup. With stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Marian Hossa going up against Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, and Nick Lidstrom, we should be heading for the most exciting and competitive, not to mention stressful, Finals series in years. Evidently, Detroit is the odds-on favorite.

It all kicks off on Saturday with Game 1 in Detroit at 8:00 PM ET on Versus and Hockey Night in Canada.
