Bob Knight Wins 900th Game, Compares Himself Favorably to Joe Paterno

Congratulations to Texas Tech head coach Bob Knight on winning his 900th game Wednesday night, as his Red Raiders beat No. 10 Texas A&M 68-53. He received a loud, sustained ovation from the home crowd after the game, as he should, as one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of the sport.

But as Knight so often does, he made post-game comments designed to draw more attention to himself but that actually detract from his accomplishment. Here's what he said:

"When I was watching the bowl games, there was a huge issue made of Joe Paterno coaching his 500th game. I coached my 500th game 25 years ago. Think about that as you compare basketball to football. And the pressure on a basketball coach is every bit as much as the pressure on a football coach."

That's the thing about Knight. He doesn't seem to understand that we all get it: He's a great coach, one of the greatest of all time. He doesn't need to spell it out for us. He doesn't need to tell us that he's done more than Joe Paterno. He could just coach his team and bask in the recognition he receives for it. But that's not enough for him.
