Cowboys second-year tight end Gavin Escobar admitted this week that he was surprised he didn’t play more than nine snaps in the season opener against the 49ers last Sunday. Escobar was targeted just once by Tony Romo and finished with no catches.
“Yeah, I was expecting to play more,” Escobar told the team’s website. “I always want to be on the field as much as possible, but we got in a hole early.”
The quick deficit certainly played a role in Escobar’s limited action, but head coach Jason Garrett suggested the shoulder injury that hampered the San Diego State product through the second half of the preseason may have also contributed.
“Gavin had the shoulder injury over the last couple of weeks of the preseason, so he didn’t play as much toward the end of the preseason as we would have liked and did a good job getting himself back,” Garrett said.
Escobar was a second round pick last year, and finished with just nine catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
