Different Course With No Clubs, But Spieth Tops Johnson

Jordan Spieth has two golf majors to Zach Johnson’s one this year.  And, unless I’m missing something, he also is about to get a $5,000 from the British Open champ.

That’s because – after the two made the healthy wager via Twitter Tuesday afternoon – the Masters and U.S. Open champ dazzled the Globe Life Park crowd in Arlington with a decent lefty fastball right over the plate and popping the mitt of the Rangers’ Josh Hamilton.

Meanwhile, up in Wrigley Field, Johnson certainly didn’t embarrass himself like Mariah Carey or 50 Cent, but his first-pitch toss before the Cubs’ game was slower and higher than Spieth’s offering.

According to the Rangers’ Twitter account, Spieth threw a “hard strike.”

“I think we might get a nice Zach Johnson check coming our way,” Spieth joked to reporters after his pitch before the Rangers’ loss to the Mariners. “As long as you don’t bounce it, I think it’s a success. And got it over the strike zone, too, so that was nice.”

The Cubs’ Twitter maintained that Johnson “registered 95 on the radar gun”, but those of us with baseball eyes know better. A decent first pitch, no doubt, but hardly mid-90s. Like Johnson’s golf scores, I’d say it was in the low 70s.

Here’s hoping Derek Holland’s left-handed pitches look as good today as Spieth’s did last night.
