The worst record in the NFC notwithstanding, Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant doesn’t believe the team is any further from contending for a championship than they were at this time last year, after the 2014 season ended with a divisional round loss to the Packers and they looked to be on the upswing.
Of course, the 2015 season sure looked like a step back. Bryant was lost to a broken foot in the opener and Tony Romo was lost to a fractured collarbone—the first of two this season—the very next week. The Cowboys were still in it in the NFC East when Romo returned in November, but the second collarbone fracture left no doubt that it just wasn’t their year.
But Bryant doesn’t believe it was truly a step back.
“I’ll tell you this—every year you have a chance to go to the Super Bowl,” Bryant told CBSSports.com. “I honestly think we have moved a step closer even though our record doesn't show it. I still think we're a damn good football team and we had an unfortunate situation no one could do anything about. I think right now we had an opportunity to get our mind right and understand what we have at stake.
“This doesn't last long, this team won't be together for a while, we have damn near all the pieces together, we have to somehow get it to back to where it's been. I just feel like injuries took a toll on us and we have to live with it and get better from it.”
