Dez Bryant Attorney on Assault Allegation

Bryant's mother files affidavit of non-prosecution

Royce West, the attorney for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, spoke to the media Tuesday from his office in Dallas regarding his client's latest legal trouble.

Bryant was implicated in a incident of domestic assault against his mother Angela at her home on July 14, and Bryant was arrested on a misdemeanor family violence charge on July 16.

Angela told officials Monday that she didn't intend to press charges against her son.

As they entered the conference room with West on Tuesday afternoon, Dez pulled the chair out for his mother Angela and they both sat down at the table.

West then read the following statement with Dez and Angela nodding along:

First of all, good afternoon. Mr. Bryant and is his mother Angela are appearing here today because they feel it's important to address reports that Mr. Bryant committed family violence against his mother. Although Dez would like to speak to this matter, on the advice of counsel he'll not make any statement at this time.

Did a family disagreement occur? Yes. Did Dez Bryant commit family violence against his mother? No.

We're here today to show that they do love and support each other just as they did before this incident a week ago. But, like all families, all families, the Bryants have disagreements. Mr. Bryant and his family understand the serious nature, as we all do, of family violence. They understand that when all the facts are reviewed, all the facts are reviewed; Mr. Bryant will be cleared of any allegations of family violence.

Angela Bryant does not want charges filed against her son. Ms. Bryant had the opportunity to speak to other people who witnessed the incident and has filed an affidavit of non-prosecution with the DeSoto Police Department. She recognizes that under the law, filing the affidavit may not impact the legal outcome of her complaint. She asks that her affidavit be taken into consideration in deciding whether or not it's in the best interest of her family to continue in the legal system or allow the family to resolve its own issues.

Dez and his mother believe that family does in fact matter and they can work together, through counseling, to deal with family issues. They ask that there not be a rush to judgment concerning their family. Let me say that again, that there not be a rush to judgment as it relates to their family. They also asked for continuing prayers and support for their family as they work through this matter.

After reading the statement, the three then exited the conference room.

Neither Dez nor his mother were expected to speak at the news conference.

The Dallas County District Attorney has received Angela's affidavit of non-prosecution, but said they must review and evaluate the case as they would any other.  They could make a decision as early as this week as to whether or not they will pursue charges against Bryant.
