Delino DeShields has his eyes on some pretty nice company in baseball when it comes to leadoff men, a role DeShields embraced last year after he was claimed in the Rule V draft from the Houston Astros.
DeShields went on to seize the everyday leadoff man role and starting center field job, and he did everything the stereotypical leadoff man does — score runs and steal bases.
DeShields ended up scoring 83 runs in 121 games, and as The Dallas Morning News pointed out on Thursday, his number of runs per times on base led the entire major leagues as he scored 49.7 percent of the times he got on base.
This year, DeShields wants to score 100 runs — a goal that should be plenty attainable if he plays a full season. Only one leadoff man in baseball scored 100 runs last year in Chicago Cubs' leadoff man Dexter Fowler.
"That's always my goal," DeShields told the Morning News. "I want to score 100 runs every year."
