Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware had successful elbow surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be ready for the beginning of the team’s offseason conditioning program, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports.
The elbow was just one of a handful of injuries that befell Ware in 2013. He also was forced to deal with a herniated disk in his back, and he missed three games--after going seven seasons without missing one--with an injured quad. The injuries and time missed took their toll, and Ware finished with career lows in tackles with 40 and sacks with six.
This is the second straight offseason in which Ware has undergone some kind of surgery. Last year, he had a procedure to repair a torn labrum. He considered having surgery on his hyperextended elbow as well, but opted to let it heal on its own going into last season.
With surgery behind him, Ware can turn his focus to contract talks with the Cowboys. Dallas will almost certainly ask him to rework his deal, and they could ask him to take a pay cut. The 31-year-old, for his part, has said he’d be open to the former but not to the latter.
