With the immediate future of the Seattle Seahawks backfield up in the air, the two-time reigning NFC Champions are likely keeping an eye on DeMarco Murray.
The Seahawks have expressed serious interest in keeping Marshawn Lynch, who is set to become a free agent next month, but (a) Lynch will likely command a massive payday, (b) he’ll be 29 at the start of next season and (c) he might not even return at all. The latest reports have Lynch seriously considering retirement.
Considering all this, Jim Moore of 710-AM ESPN Radio Seattle believes the Seahawks' best contingency plan involves Murray lining up behind Russell Wilson in 2015. Murray is younger than Lynch, for one--he turned 27 on Thursday--and, even if Lynch does come back, Moore reasons that the Seahawks showing interest in Murray will only help them in negotiations with the man they call Beast Mode.
“Murray turned 27 Thursday and is two years younger than Lynch. You could argue that he had a better line to run behind in Dallas and couldn't possibly gain 1,845 yards here, but I'm not so sure about that,” Moore writes. “If you could get Murray for $5 million a year, maybe you could save some money that you would have paid Lynch and increase your chances of retaining cornerback Byron Maxwell. Or picking up Larry Fitzgerald if the future Hall of Fame receiver can't work out a reduced deal with the Cardinals.
“If I had the option between Murray and Maxwell, and Lynch and not having Maxwell, my preferred model would be the former over the latter.”
