DE Ben Bass Turning Heads in Oxnard

Bass has been taking snaps with the first team defense since Anthony Spencer went down with a bone bruise

If this opening week of training camp is any indication, Ben Bass is a name the casual fan might want to get to know.

Bass has been taking snaps at the defensive end spot opposite DeMarcus Ware on first team defense, thanks to a spate injuries to the defensive line--the team has already lost reserve Tyrone Crawford for the year with a torn Achilles and Anthony Spencer will miss the next few weeks as he recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery--and, in doing so, he’s turning some heads.

One of those heads belongs to defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, who half-joked this week that Bass has been so impressive, he could make Hatcher dispensable when his contract runs out following the 2013 season.

Bass has it all,” Hatcher said, per the Dallas Morning News. “Bass is going to be the reason I’m playing on a different team next year. He’s coming on. He’s coming on. I just have to keep my job security, keep playing my butt off.”

Bass appeared in just a pair of games in 2012, recording a single tackle.
