Darvish Decision Was Correct One

Reports began surfacing over the weekend from the folks over at noted Rangers blog Nolan Writin' that Yu Darvish being shut down was the straw that broke the camel's back in the decision for Ron Washington to resign as Rangers manager abruptly and suddenly.

And it wouldn't be shocking news, at all.

But that doesn't make it a wrong decision for general manager Jon Daniels and his baseball brain trust to shut down their ace for the final month of what is going to be a historically bad season for the Rangers.

Darvish ends his year with a 10-7 record and a 3.06 ERA to go along with his league leading strikeout per nine innings ratio. He's one of the few special, legitimate aces in baseball, and if the man says his elbow was sore, stiff, whatever, you take notice.

Could Darvish be pitching right now without risk? Possibly, but it doesn't matter. Why would the Rangers run him out there for four more starts when they're on their way to a last-place finish in the AL West and a likely No. 1 pick in the June draft.

Darvish said he'll be ready to go come spring training and that he isn't a fan of being shut down but respects the decision of the Rangers' front office and medical staff.

"I think we've all made the right decision in shutting it down," he told reporters through a translator. "Even if I wanted, the medical staff are experts in what they do, so I have to go by what they say. I'm glad that we were able to detect this at the early stage."
