Darrion Weems Making Push for Swing Tackle Gig

Darrion Weems is quietly making a push to take over the Dallas Cowboys’ swing tackle job.

With third round pick Chaz Green still on the physically unable to perform list recovering from June hip surgery, Weems is the frontrunner for the position left vacant by Jermey Parnell, the swing tackle who did so well replacing Doug Free on the right side last year that the Jaguars gave him a five-year, $32 million back in March.

It’s not that Weems hasn’t struggled. Playing left tackle in each of the first two preseason games, he committed his share of mistakes. But head coach Jason Garrett has been encouraged by the fourth-year Oregon product’s steady improvement throughout the offseason and camp.

“Getting better,” Garrett told the team’s official website. “He played a lot on the San Diego game. He played a lot in the San Francisco game. He’s out here. He takes a lot of snaps in practice. Every chance we get, we put him in one on one situations in front of the team, see how he responds. He’s getting better. He’s fighting through it. He’s improved technically. I think his demeanor has improved.”
