If the Dallas Cowboys hadn’t traded up in the second round of last weekend’s draft to land Boise State defensive end Demarcus Lawrence and stayed put at the No. 47 overall pick, they would’ve most likely selected Mizzou defensive end Kony Ealy, executive vice president Stephen Jones said.
“I would say that Ealy was probably our next pick,” Jones said Tuesday, per the Dallas Morning News. Ealey ended up going 60th overall, to the Carolina Panthers.
Jones added that Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, who was connected to the Cowboys in a good deal of mock drafts, was never really considered. Jernigan went to the Baltimore Ravens at No. 48, the spot after the Cowboys' original pick.
“Sometimes what you read isn’t always true in terms of the Jernigans of the world and people like that,” Jones said. “We really didn’t have him in that mix.”
Had the Cowboys stayed put in the second, they would’ve targeted LSU guard Trai Turner in the third round. Instead, that pick went to Washington in the trade that yielded the aforementioned Lawrence.
