Cowboys Will “Make a Push” for Dez Deal Before July 15

At some point between now and July 15, the Dallas Cowboys will make one last push to get a long-term deal done with Dez Bryant.

If they can’t make it happen before that deadline, Bryant will play out the year under the franchise tag.

“Would we like to get a long-term deal on him? Of course we would,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told the team’s official website. “We’ll work hard to do that, and I’m sure we’ll make a push at some point and see if we can make it work. If not, then hopefully he’ll understand that it’s difficult to make a deal at this point, and he’ll come on in and get ready to play.”

The Cowboys have the security blanket of knowing Bryant will be in Dallas this year, but the fact doesn’t make getting the long-term deal done any less of a priority for the front office. Even if Bryant plays under the tag, which seems very likely at this point, Jones suggests the team will get right back to the negotiating table afterward.

“We’ve got him under the franchise tag. We know he’ll be a Cowboy this year, and if he ends up playing out this year under the tag, then we’ll go right back to work again next year,” Jones said.
