Going into the 2016 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys will sacrifice immediate impact for the right quarterback-of-the-future type, executive vice president Stephen Jones said this week.
"I mean you have to look at it," Jones said, per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "You’re not naive to it, but if you have the opportunity in this league, in our situation, to get a potential franchise quarterback, then you have to make the investment. You have to have the patience. You sacrifice maybe that opportunity that maybe is impactful right now."
Of the 12 games Tony Romo missed in 2015, the Cowboys lost 11 of them, so a quarterback would address a need behind the starter. But as for the starter himself, Jones is with his father in believing he has a lot of good football in front of him.
“He may play three of four more years,” Jones said. “If that were the case that is great because that means he is playing lights out for three or four more years. That means we are successful.”
