Cowboys VP Says Team Isn't Looking to Add Any D-Line Help

The Cowboys finished tied for 25th in the NFL sacks last year

Going into the draft last week, everyone in the football watching world knew the Dallas Cowboys needed pass rush help, and a lot of folks assumed this need would lead them to selecting a pass rusher at the top of the draft.

They did not.

Dallas got running back Ezekiel Elliott in the first round and Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith—who won’t play until 2017—in the second.

It wasn’t until the middle rounds that the Cowboys got to addressing the defensive front with Nebraska defensive tackle Maliek Collins in the third and Oklahoma defensive end Charles Tapper in the fourth—and those were the only defensive linemen they drafted.

Perhaps not surprisingly given their draft—or maybe because he has no choice at this point in the year—Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said recently that he likes the D-line on the roster now, to the point that the team’s “eyes are open,” but they’re not actively looking for help on the defensive front.

“We don't feel like we need to [add anything], but we always have our eyes open," Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “At some point, I'm sure things will change, and if we see the right opportunity to improve our football team we'll do it.

“You know my old saying, '365 days a year you're looking to improve.' But do I think we could go play with everybody on this roster and get going and feel good about it? Yes. But you always look for ways to improve your team.”
