Cowboys VP: “I Think We've Had a Really Solid Offseason”

Draft season was kind to the Dallas Cowboys this year

Beginning with the opening night of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys offseason got a lot better looking within the span of about a week recently.

Back on April 30, the Cowboys’ draft room were thrilled when they landed UConn defensive back Byron Jones with the 27th overall pick. They were thrilled again, the room reportedly cheering, when they got Nebraska pass rusher Randy Gregory--pretty much universally considered a first round talent--in the second round, at 60th overall. Then, in the biggest coup of all, they added LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins as an undrafted free agent last Thursday. That’s three players with first round talent, and it cost them a first round pick, a second round pick and a UFA deal. Not bad.

Prior to their big week, the Cowboys had signed (among others) defensive end Greg Hardy and linebacker Jasper Brinkley in free agency, and brought back linebacker Rolando McClain.

But executive vice president Stephen Jones won’t say the offseason has exceeded the expectations of the Cowboys’ front office.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve ‘exceeded.’ You always have high expectations of what you might accomplish in the offseason,” Jones said, per ESPN Dallas. “I think it fell right for us. You might say ‘Well, you didn’t get a running back in the draft,’ but you’ve only got so many picks and you’re not going to be able to get everything at the end of the day. I think, for the most part, the draft fell in areas where we needed it to fall. I think we were able to get good players at the places we were thinking. I think we’ve had a really solid offseason. Our goal is to get better, and I think we got better and the proof will be when we go to training camp and get to work and then when we start playing football games.”
