Cowboys Secondary Feeling Benefits of Upgraded Pass Rush

The Cowboys spent much of the offseason looking to rebuild the pass rush

This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys devoted a good deal of effort to shoring up the pass rush, with additions like Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory. The members of the secondary are already feeling the effects of those efforts.

Defensive end Jeremy Mincey recalled cornerback Brandon Carr speaking to him on the sidelines at AT&T Stadium after giving up a 39-yard reception to Mike Wallace during the first half of the preseason loss to the Vikings on Saturday night.

“He was telling me, ‘If I knew you guys were going to get there that fast, I would’ve played off,’” Mincey said, per Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.

After the game, Carr was full of praise for the men up front, and why not? A better pass rush means less pressure on the secondary and, potentially, a sense of freedom among those corners and safeties to make plays.

“Yeah, we see it,” Carr said. “The guys have the will to get off the ball, man. They want to get to that quarterback. Coach [Rod] Marinelli and his defensive line staff are doing a great job getting those guys motivated each and every day to be their best at all times. The rush and coverage go hand in hand. We need the guys up front to get after the quarterback. On the back end, we’ve got to hold our own as well.”
