The Cowboys’ search to replace departed secondary coach Jerome Henderson is leading them back to the future. As in they will today interview Mike Nolan, whose father, Dick, was a team assistant for 15 years during the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Head coach Jason Garrett has also interviewed Tim Lewis, Al Golden and Steve Brown about the vacancy in the wake of Henderson’s departure to be the Falcons’ passing game defensive coordinator.
Remember not that long ago when NFL teams had merely a head coach? Or, more recently, only a head coach flanked by offensive and defensive coordinators?
Those times – like the game itself – have been chopped into tiny pieces and sub-parts. The Falcons now have a defensive coordinator who is solely in charge of defending passing plays. Geez.
Nolan has been in the NFL since ’87, including stints as the 49ers’ head coach and defensive coordinator of the Falcons.
Coming off a disappointing 4-12 season and with several assistants with expiring contracts, the Cowboys’ coaching staff will be tweaked in 2016. But, obviously, who they replace Henderson with takes a back seat to whom they select with the No. 4 pick in the draft.
