Cowboys Restructure Tyron Smith's Deal

The move frees up more than $7 million in cap space for the team

The Dallas Cowboys restructured All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith’s contract on Monday to free up more than $7 million in cap space, according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.

The Cowboys accomplished this by converting most of Smith’s $10 million base salary for 2016 into a signing bonus, so that his new base salary is $1 million. It is the second consecutive year the Cowboys have restructured the very team-friendly deal Smith signed two years ago.

Prior to reworking Smith the Cowboys also moved some money around on defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford’s deal, and they could look to restructure Tony Romo or Dez Bryant for more space going forward. There’s also the possibility that they either give a pay cut to, or cut ties with Brandon Carr.

Smith has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons, and was a first team All-Pro in 2014.
