Just a couple days after Doug Free suffered an ankle injury late in the first half of the 38-27 victory over the Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys are optimistic about the veteran right tackle’s status going into Sunday’s matchup with the Colts at AT&T Stadium.

That’s not to say the team isn’t at all concerned with the injury, though.

Doug has been working with this ankle, and it is a concern,” Jones told 105.3-FM The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News. “I have every reason to believe, though, that by the time Sunday gets here that we’ll be able to get him out there and get some play out of him. That’s going to be the way this injury is probably for the rest of the year, to some degree.”

Free missed the entire second half of the Eagles game with the injury, and was replaced by Jermey Parnell. Parnell stepped in for Free back in October, when Free suffered a foot injury.

“He’s shown that he can go into a ballgame and play,” Garrett said. “He did that at the end of the Seattle game if you remember. He played in the last handful of plays there and did a nice job. That’s always a big test for a guy who hasn’t played a lot who’s been a backup player: Can you just go in and can you function on Play One and do your job over and over and over again?

“He certainly has the physical ability to do it. I think he’s handled himself well in a mature manner to show he can go in emotionally and handle those situations. Looks like he played well in the ballgame.”
