This is what it’s come to with the Cowboys in free agency. And I’m not sure Alfred Morris change that mundane – if maybe not efficient – tone.
They need a running back, for sure. Dunbar is recovering from a major knee injury as the third-down back and Darren McFadden’s 1,000-yard season came totally out of the blue. There are draftable backs for the team at No. 4 in the draft, but the Cowboys have more pressing needs.
If not fantastic, Morris is indeed familiar.
The former Redskins’ runner will be at Valley Ranch today for a visit, after burning the Cowboys for 710 yards in eight career starts. In the NFC East Championship Game in 2012 he rushed for three touchdowns, each punctuated with his trademark baseball home-run swing celebration.
He was a productive back in Washington, never missing a game and carrying the ball 200+ times in each of his four seasons.
He made two Pro Bowls and rushed for 28 touchdowns in his first three seasons. But there is also a decline, from 1,613 yards in 2012 to only 751 last season. Some of that can be tied to the dismal deterioration of running quarterback Robert Griffin III.
