Cowboys Jaylon Smith ‘Definitely Learning a Lot' from Sean Lee

Though Cowboys rookie linebacker Jaylon Smith’s injured knee won’t allow him to get reps on the field, the second round pick is taking advantage of what he can learn off the field.

Asked about the improvements he’s made from studying film, Smith said, “a lot,” and gave specific credit to Cowboys middle linebacker Sean Lee.

“I’m definitely learning a lot from Sean,” Smith said.  “I’m picking his brain each and every day.  It’s about learning the system, getting acclimated to the surroundings.  When I’m back out there, it’s going to be elite.”

Widely considered to be a first round talent when healthy, Smith suffered nerve damage in his knee when injured in Notre Dame’s bowl game.  The Cowboys hope Smith is available to return at the end of the 2016 regular season, and the rookie is encouraged by the progress he’s seen in his knee since he was drafted in late April.

“Great improvements, strength, a lot of those things,” Smith said.  “We have a great training staff here.  For me, it’s just about putting faith in our team physicians and everything is going to be alright.  I’m not sure when the next test will be, but I have all of my trust in them and we’re going to do some great things in Dallas.”
