Cowboys Haven't Ruled Out Doug Free, Just Yet

Free will count more than $10 million against the cap in 2013

It’s widely assumed that the Dallas Cowboys will part ways with underachieving right tackle Doug Free this offseason in order to clear cap space, but don’t take the move for granted. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said this week that the team had not made a decision regarding No. 68.

I wouldn’t rule Doug out,” Jones said this week, per ESPN Dallas.

Free will count a little more than $10 million against the camp in 2012, but if he is cut in June, the team can save $7 million of that. Jones called the idea that Free could be asked to take a pay cut was “speculative” and said that the team was actually fairly optimistic about the offensive line going into 2013, following an injury-hampered 2012.

“I’m not naïve either,” Jones said. “I know not everybody’s going to be healthy because guys get hurt, but last year I do think it was inordinate.”
