Cowboys Defense May Catch Break vs. Ailing Washington O-Line

NBC 5 News

The Cowboys might be dealing with a Washington club that has injuries along the offensive line.  Left tackle Williams, guard Brandon Schreff,  right tackle Morgan Moses might not be able to go Sunday after some injuries they suffered in Monday’s 34-24 loss in Philadelphia.

Head coach Jay Gruden was asked how he will prepare for the 3-3 Cowboys this week and replied. “I don’t have any lineman.”

The coach followed that up by saying he doesn't know if left tackle Trent Williams can play, or if right guard Brandon Scherff can play. Right tackle Morgan Moses might be able to play, though he sustained injuries to both ankles Monday night. Left guard Shawn Lauvao is the only Redskins starter on the line without a serious injury.

For Scherff, the news was better than originally feared. It looked like the Redskins might lose their Pro Bowl guard for significant time in Philadelphia, but MRI results a grade 2 MCL sprain. It's possible with a brace and treatment, Scherff won't miss any time.

The word on Williams will be more complicated. He needs surgery on his knee but is trying to push that off until the offseason. For Gruden, the team also has to consider what the long-term impact on Williams' health can be.

"We have to do what's right for Trent," the coach said.

The Cowboys and Washington come into Sunday’s contest with 3-3 records. Washington was swept in the season series to the Eagles and a loss to the Cowboys would be three NFC East losses and might all but cancel any shot for them to win the division.

The Cowboys play at FedEx Field at 3:25 Sunday. Washington plays on a short rest having lost Monday Night in Philadelphia.

Last year the Cowboys won at FedEx Field 27-23 and in Arlington 31-26.
