The Cowboys waived quarterback Jameill Showers on Sunday to create room for newly signed QB Mark Sanchez.

Showers initially made the team when the Cowboys made final cuts before the NFL's 53-man roster deadline. However, Sanchez was also a Saturday cut, and the Cowboys decided to bring him on board.

Sanchez is the veteran quarterback the Cowboys finally settled on after not addressing the issue when backup quarterback Kellen Moore broke his leg. When Tony Romo went down with a back injury, the team needed a veteran presence to backup rookie Dak Prescott.

Showers is a second year, undrafted quarterback who took a lot of snaps during training camp. The former UTEP Miner and Texas A&M Aggie started and played the entire preseason finale against the Houston Texans. Showers didn't do enough in that game to give the Cowboys confidence that he could lead the offense if something happened to Prescott during the stretch the rookie will start in place of Romo.

The Cowboys have a big decision to make on Romo. If he's placed on the injured reserve-return list, he's ineligible for the first seven games of the season. That would give the Cowboys an additional roster spot. If the team thinks Romo can be ready before then, he'll stay on the active roster.

Unless another team claims him, the Cowboys will likely sign Showers to the practice squad. On Sunday, they added several players to the practice squad:

  • Ryan Russell, DE
  • Rico Gathers, TE
  • Austin Traylor, TE
  • Vince Mayle, WR
  • Andy Jones, WR
  • Jake Brendel, OL
  • Deon King, LB
