Cowboys Could Promote Jameill Showers To Active Roster

The former UTEP quarterback has spent the entire season on the practice squad

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett isn’t ruling anything out in terms of who might be brought in for a look here in the final two weeks of the season.

“We can go get guys. We’re excited and hopefully see a couple of guys on our team right now. But we’re in those discussions as we speak,” Garrett said this week, per the team’s official website. “We’ll figure out what the whole landscape looks like and make our best decisions.”

One potential move Garrett addressed has the Cowboys promoting quarterback Jameill Showers from the practice squad to the active roster. They'll have two roster spots freed with both Tony Romo and Gavin Escobar headed to injured reserve.

A UTEP product who also spent time at Texas A&M, Showers was signed as an undrafted free agent prior to this season. He went 15-of-32 passing in the preseason for 125 yards, a touchdown and an interception while also playing special teams, and impressed the coaching staff enough to earn a spot on the practice squad.

There’s a lot to like about Showers,” Garrett said back in September, per Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He’s a really talented kid. He can do a lot of things, obviously to be able to play quarterback and also have the role that he had on special teams throughout training camp and the preseason. That’s impressive physically to be able to do that. Not many quarterbacks can do that and not many special teams guys can do the other thing.

“So he’s a big kid. He’s very athletic. He can throw the ball. He’s got a clean stroke. He’s an accurate passer, and then to say now you’re going to go run down on kickoff or going to be a personal protector, there’s a lot of versatility there that you like. Maybe more than anything else we like what he’s all about as a person. He’s a serious-minded kid. Football is important him, embraces every kind of opportunity we’ve given him and we feel like he can be a versatile guy for us both as a quarterback but also doing a lot of other things on the practice squad.”
