Cowboys Believe They Can “Bring the Best Out” in McFadden

Last week, new Dallas Cowboys running back Darren McFadden said that after seven seasons in the NFL, he still doesn’t think the league has seen him at his best. He also expressed some excitement over the prospect of running behind the Cowboys’ young and highly-touted offensive line, which will be the best unit he’s ever worked with.

Perhaps because of the team’s confidence in that offensive line, head coach Jason Garrett believes the Cowboys will be able to provide an environment in which the former fourth round pick can flourish--in which he can show the league his best.

“We liked him a lot coming out of college,” Garrett said of McFadden, per David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. “He came out in ’08. That was the same year we drafted Felix Jones. We spent a lot of time with him and on him. I think he was the fourth player taken in that draft. There was a lot to like about him.

“We are confident in the environment we can create for our guys to bring the best out in him.”

Echoing owner Jerry Jones’ comments last month, Garrett declared that the Cowboys are high on McFadden’s skill set but acknowledged that injuries are a potential concern. After all, prior to last season, McFadden had never played a full 16-game season.

“He is a big explosive back,” Garrett said. “He is quick. He is fast. He is physical. He can run inside. He can hit the home run.  He can catch the ball. He can protect.

“Now injuries have been an issue for him. We don’t think significant injuries, more the soft tissue type injuries. Hopefully we can create the right environment for him to be healthy and take advantage of those opportunities.”
