Consistency Key for Gavin Escobar in Year 3

Consistency’s the word for Gavin Escobar, as he prepares for his third season in the NFL.

A second round pick out of San Diego State in 2013, Escobar has six touchdowns in two seasons, which is actually pretty impressive considering all the more established weapons Tony Romo has at his disposal. But taken as a whole, his stats reflect a man who hasn’t been on the field as much as he will when (or if) he establishes himself as a more well-rounded tight end.

Escobar had exactly nine catches in each of his first two seasons, 134 receiving yards in 2013 and 105 yards last year.

Those numbers will go up if a couple things happen. First, he has to show the team that he can be a more effective blocking tight end. That will lead to him being on the field more, which will lead to more chances. When he gets those chances, he has to make the most of them.

“Just being consistent in the run game--that’s something from Day 1 that I’ve really had to show coaches that I can do. That’s something that I still work on every day,” Escobar told the team's website recently. “Working on my routes, getting open, creating separation--just being consistent all through, being a consistent player and making plays.”
