Here comes Charles Haley, again knocking on the door. And here should be the Pro Football Hall of Fame, keeping it locked.
The former Cowboys’ defensive end with five Super Bowl rings was a finalist last year and is again on the nomination list for this year’s Hall of Fame class.
The group is led by Kurt Warner and Junior Seau, and also includes Jerome Bettis, Orlando Pace, Morton Anderson and coaches Bill Cowher, Don Coryell and Mike Holmgren. The selection committee will trim the list from 113 to 25 in late November, to 15 in January and will finalize the class the day before the Super Bowl.
Haley certainly has the onfield credentials to be included. The five rings. A Super Bowl-record 4.5 sacks. He elevated the Cowboys to three championships in four years.
But in an NFL that is increasingly concerned with bad behavior (re: Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, etc.), Haley’s conduct was immoral, though not illegal. For years he treated team employees and media members like roadkill, a virtual punching bag for his off-color entertainment.
Too many good pass rushers want in Canton for the committee to usher in bad characters.
Sorry, Charlie.
