As a rookie in 2015, Dallas Cowboys defensive back Byron Jones started games at both cornerback spots and at free safety. In 2016, the team will have Jones concentrate on the free safety position, and the coaching staff are excited to see what the first round pick out of UConn can do when putting his focus in one place.
“His range is really good,” said Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, per ESPN Dallas. “He’s got good vision back there. I’m real excited to get him in a spot. We moved him around so much last year, so hopefully we get him in a position to use his talent and his vision. He is really smart.”
Jones finished his rookie season with 66 tackles and nine pass break-ups and, to his credit, never complained about being moved around.
“Honestly I was just doing what I was supposed to do and coached to do,” Jones said. “They gave me a great challenge, and I tried to step up and meet it as best I could. That was something they told me when they drafted me with me being a versatile player.
“That was part of the deal.”
