Buddy Ryan: Rob “Gets the Best Out of His People”

Not surprisingly, the legendary and oh-so-polarizing Buddy Ryan gave his son, Rob, who the Dallas Cowboys brought on as defensive coordinator officially this week, a ringing endorsement recently. Ryan said that Rob, who is the twin brother of Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan, is a highly effective coach, adept both at orchestrating an effective and inventive defense, and motivating his players.

"He gets the best out of his people," Buddy said, per the Dallas Morning News. "He always has people giving 100 percent."

But the praise for Ryan doesn’t stop at fatherly obligation. According to Bob Mazie, who coached the Ryan twins at Southwestern Oklahoma State, both Rob and Rex have a particular knack for winning players over--for, as it’s often said, getting players to “buy in.”

"Players like them, Mazie said. "They're not boring. They're going to keep you alert. And the players are all going to listen.”

The difference between Ryan and his predecessor, Wade Phillips, will be immediately noticeable, continued Mazie.

"Wade is so laid-back," he said. "He didn't motivate those guys. Rob will. He'll do a heckuva job."
