Even before the Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl on the back of their suffocating pass rush, it was abundantly clear that the Dallas Cowboys needed to upgrade their own.
Dallas finished with 31 sacks, which put them in a tie with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints for 25th in the league.
On the other hand Denver, led by defensive coordinator and former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, were the best in the league at getting to the quarterback. They had 52 sacks on the year and tied the 1985 Bears’ record with seven sacks in the Super Bowl.
For Jerry Jones, the upset victory reminded him of the importance of that particular area of the roster.
“Wade Phillips has shown just how big (pass rush) is to winning a championship. And congratulations to him,” Jones told Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “We are proud for him.”
