Jason Garrett has already parted the Red Sea and turned water into wine, so what can he possibly do for an encore.
How about fixing David Buehler?
The Cowboys kicker was the one serious black mark on an otherwise glorious day in this season of misery. He sent a kickoff out of bounds, missed a short field goal and had an extra point blocked for a triple crown of things that can wind up costing you games on days when everything else isn't clicking.
Disaster was averted on Sunday, but is it really worth risking a loss in the future when you have enough evidence to doubt Buehler's fitness for the job? Ever since he was handed the job without a competition, Buehler has turned in underwhelming performance after underwhelming performance. And it isn't just the flashy failures that make you wonder about his fitness for battle.
None of his seven kickoffs on Sunday resulted in touchbacks, which is pretty damning for a player who was supposed to be a weapon in that phase of the game. You could swallow the occasional missed field goal -- Buehler had made six straight before Sunday's miss -- but only if Buehler is exceptional in some other area.
That's not the case, which makes you wonder why the Cowboys aren't at least looking to see what else is out there. Kickers are in greater supply than demand and there's no reason to settle for Buehler without seeing if there's a better choice. The answer may be that Buehler, whose non-kicking attributes made him a darling of the 2009 training camp, is a Jerry Jones draft choice and about the only 2009 draftee still on the team.
That will make getting rid of him difficult, but if Garrett is really worthy of the platitudes he's getting around the league then he'll find a way to make it all work.
