Bennett Bounced From WWF Tourney

Cowboys' tight end Martellus Bennett proved recently that near-superhuman size and strength will take you only so far in the sometimes-ruthless world of "Words With Friends." Bennett was eliminated by opera singer Jolie Stratton in the first round of D Magazine's WWF tournament, by a score of 474-249. The game took around three hours.

A tough loss indeed, but at least Bennett made it to the tournament. The only other pro athlete in the tournament, former player and current assistant coach for the Mavericks, Popeye Jones was disqualified in his match with local marketing specialist Julie Saathoff.

Bennett's loss set up a second-round match-up between Stratton and Adam McGill. Stratton disposed of McGill today in the first game of the second round by a score of 382-371.

Other names of note in the tournament include local crooner and Old '97s frontman Rhett Miller (who may have a time bomb in his mind), and sports journalists Evan Grant, Ben Rogers and Jeff "Skin" Wade. And of course, we would be remiss not to note the participation of writer and radio personality Gordon Keith.

Miller defeated local salesman Pete Mata in the first round to set up a second-round bout between he and conceptual artist Jessica Oyhenart.

ESPN Radio partners Ben and Skin did battle in the first round as well, with Rogers winning out by a score of 407-256. Keith advanced by beating graphic designer Andy Gotcher, 361 to 293.
